The Grand Snake Sacrifice

Janamejayan's father was King Parikshit, who is the son of Abhimanyu.

One day King Parikshit goes hunting, he shoots a deer. But the deer escapes.

So Parikshit goes to the near by Aashramam & asks the Muni Shamika about the wounded deer.

Shamika is on deep meditation, so does not speak or answer the king's questions.

The angry king, takes a dead snake and places it over the muni as a garland.

The muni, though forgives the king but continues his thabam with the dead snake garland.

But the son of Shamika is not so forgiving, so he curses that King Parikshit will die of a snake bite.

Shamika, on learning about his son's curse, tells the son that without the king's protection they can lead their ascetic life. So you should always forgive the king for his follies.

But the son does not relent, so Shamika sends a warning to the King Parikshit.

On receiving the warning, the king builds a tower and isolates himself within that tower.

So Takshakan, the king of the snakes, is wondering how to kill the king.

Meanwhile, the sage Kashyap gets to know about the king's curse. Kashyap is a very powerful rishi, he can cure any snake bite. So he goes to see the king and cure him when a snake bites.

On the way Takshakan stops Kashyap & asks why is he going to save the king. Kashyap says, when he saves the king, the king will give him lot of treasure & money.

Takshakan tells Kashyap that, he cannot save the king when I bite the king. There is no anti venom for my bite.

Kashyap says he can cure any snake bite, so lets have a test. Takshakan bites the nearby tree, it dies within a moment of the bite. But then Kashyap resurrects thee tree and cures it.

On seeing this, Takshakan tells Kashyap not interfere in this as the king's life is come to an end. Takshakan also tells Kashyap that I will give you what the king would have given, take that & go happily

Kashyap is hesitant, so Takshakan asks Kashyap to speak to Yama and to confirm that the king's life is coming to an end. Yama confirms that king's life is coming to an end, so he need not save the king.

So Kashyap takes the gold & money from Takshakan & leaves.

Soon after this Takshakan gets an idea to kill the king, he calls some if his snakes and asks them to take the form of saints & give these fruits to the king. Takshakan becomes small like a worm & hides himself in one of the fruits.

The snakes goes to see the king, the guards do not allow them inside the tower. So the snakes say that we have prayed for the king's safety and we got him some presents, at-least give those to the king. The guards ask the king, king says no problem since they are rishis.

So the fruits are delivered inside the tower, then Takshakan comes out of the fruit and kills the king.

When Janamejayan, becomes the king he conducts a yaagam to kill all the snakes in the world. Many rishis come to perform this yaagam, one of them is Vyasar.

All the people in the yaagam ask him to recite the great story that he has composed.

He starts telling Mahabharatham.
