Tilothamai Story

Once upon a time there were two Asuran princes, sunda & upasunda. They were twins. They both were always of one mind and united in their thoughts & actions. And they were inseparable, they did everything together.

And they wanted to bring the entire world under their control. So they both started doing thavam to acquire more power. The intensity of the thavam was so great that, the devas were frightened.

So the devas sent beautiful girls to distract them, but the asuran princes ignored them and continued their thavam.

So the devas created an illusion to show that the mothers & sisters of the asuran princes were in distress and being persecuted by the rakshasans. The asuran princes still did not leave their thavam.

Finally Brahma decided to intervene and went before the brothers. He told them that he will grant them a boon, if they stop their thavam.

The brothers agreed and asked for them to be invincible, powerful & immortal. Brahma said, he can grant everything except the immortal part and asked them to wish for something else.

So the brothers asked Brahma that, they could only be killed by each other. This would make them practically immortal as they would never fight among themselves. Brahma agreed to this.

The asuran brothers then started their world domination, they defeated all the kings and killed them. The entire world was in turmoil as the normal life ceased. They even defeated the devas and drove them from their homes.

So everyone goes to Brahma and asks him to rescue them from these brothers, as Brahma is the one who granted their wish to be powerful, invincible & practically immortal.

Brahma devises a way to end these brothers. He calls visvakarman ( the chief architect of the gods) and orders him to create a beautiful girl.

Viswakaraman creates the most beautiful girl in the entire universe, using small parts of all the most beautiful gems in the universe.

Brahma names her Thilothamai. The beauty of thilothamai is such that, none can resist looking at her. The devas were going crazy looking at her. Even the most powerful gods could not resist their temptation, Sivan developed four heads so he could see her in whatever direction she is. Indiran developed 1000 eyes all over his body, so he can see her.

Such is her beauty.

Brahma asks Thilothamai to go create dissent between the brothers.

Thilothamai goes where these brothers were, upon seeing her both the brothers wanted her for himself. Even though they did everything together and shared everything, they did not want to give up Thilothamai to other or share.

So they started fighting and killed each other.

Narathar tells this story to the Pandavas and tells them to put rules in place and abide by them strictly to prevent any dissent among brothers, as they have all married one woman Draupathi.
