Garudan story

Once upon a time............

The rishi Kashyap had two wives. Kadru & Vinata.

Both of them wanted Children. Kadru wanted many, Vinata wanted powerful.

Thru the rishi, Kadru got 1000 impregnated eggs & Vinata 2.

After 500 years, the 1000 eggs of Kadru hatched and out came the snakes.

The 2 eggs of Vinata were like ........... Eggs. Nothing was happening.

The Jealous Vinata broke open one egg, and the half grown Aruna came out & cursed the
mother to be a slave till the other egg hatches.

Kadru had 1000 snakes for children. The prominent ones are Takshaka, Vasuki & Sesha.

The Devas & Asuras were churning the milk sea for amirtham, using vasuki as the rope.

Along with amirtham many other things also came from the sea, one such is a beautiful white horse.

Kadru & Vinata has a bet about the color of the horse.

Vinata says its completely white. Kadru says, its tail is black.
So the bet is the loser becomes the slave of the winner.

Kadru goes to her children & asks them to sit on the tail of the horse, so it becomes black.

The nagas refuse, the angry Kadru curses them they will all be killed in the fire of a Yagam conducted by a future king.

Afraid of the mothers curse, the snakes decide to do what their mother had asked.

Kadru & vinata go to see the horse, and because of the snakes on the tail, the tail is black.

Vinata becomes the slave of Kadru for 500 years, when the second egg of Vinata hatches & Garudan is born.

Thus Garudan, the bird who eats snakes for snacks, was born as a slave to the snakes.

Because of his mother's wish, garudan was very powerful. He was more powerful than all the gods. He can change his size from an atom to that of the universe. He can also change his shape to anything he wanted.

But he was still a slave to the snakes.

One day the snakes told garudan to bring the Amirtham.

Garudan went to his mother & asked why should he do the bidding of the nagas.
His mother told him the story of their slavery.

Garudan then went to the nagas & asked them to release him & his mother from slavery, if he brings the amirtham.

The nagas agree.

Garudan goes to the devalogam and defeats all the gods, and takes the amirtham. Contrary to the gods belief, he does not eat it. He is taking it & leaving.

So Indran asks him why is he doing this.

Garudan tells him why. Indran is worried because the snakes are poisonous & if they become immortal, there would be
no life left on earth.

Garudan tells Indiran that, he will take the amirtham to the nagas & Indiran can steal it from them before they eat it.

Indiran agrees.

Garudan goes to the nagas with the amirtham & places it in the Dharbai grass. Then asks them to release him & his mother.

The snakes release them.

Garudan tells them to take bath & pray before eating the amirtham.

So the nagas goes to do the same. Meanwhile Indiran comes & steals back the amirtham.

The snakes after returning, see that the amirtham is gone. So they decide to lick the grass on which the amirtham was placed,
so they can get some benefits at the least.

When they lick the grass, the grass cuts their tongue.

So from then on the snakes tongues were split, & till this day.
